Universita di Pisa, Italy
The University of Pisa is a public institution with twenty departments, with high level research centres in the sectors of agriculture, astrophysics, computer science, engineering, medicine and veterinary medicine. The University of Pisa was officially established in 1343, although a number of scholars claim its origin dates back to the 11th century. The Department of Energy, Systems, Territory and Construction Engineering (DESTEC) joined EUREC in 2011. The University of Pisa has run a specialisation master in "Planning and Operation of Renewable Energy Systems" from 2006 to 2009 hosting 70 students in four editions, giving them a systemic view of the energy system including economics, legal, managerial, technical and market issues. The University of Pisa contributes to the European Master in "Sustainable Energy System Management" by teaching some classes in Hanze UAS and providing help to students for the project semester.
Research activity at DESTEC focuses on the themes of electrical engineering, power systems, managerial engineering, thermodynamics, thermal machines, constructions engineering, land engineering and architecture. Research activity cover the entire energy chain from primary resources to final use including the integration of managerial and economic issues. Renewable energy is one of the main interdisciplinary subjects investigated with great emphasis given to grid integration issues and use of storage systems. Electrochemical storage has been largely studied in the past 30 years.
